Maltese citizens have the right of abode in the UK and other EU member states since Malta is a member of the European Union with full British citizenship being granted to Maltese emigrants from 1 January 1964 after independent Malta’s independence from Britain on 21 September 1964.

Malta is part of the Schengen Area under EU law. Maltese citizens are therefore entitled to enter other EU member states without a visa for short stays (up to 90 days within six months).

Obtaining Maltese citizenship (through naturalization or registration) does not absolve non-Maltese nationals from their existing nationality obligations. Maltese citizens who are also nationals of other countries must enter and leave the country using their Maltese passports.

Malta is not a member state of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie but nonetheless has an active honorary consulate in Paris, opened in 2012 in conjunction with France’s Institut français de presse (IFP) media institute.

Maltese citizens may travel to Canada without a visa, but must apply for Electronic Travel Authorisation online before their flight. Maltese citizens are allowed to live and work in Canada indefinitely. Malta does not maintain consular services in Canada; Maltese citizens requiring consular assistance can contact the High Commission of Canada in London.

Maltese citizens may obtain a visa at the Italian Embassy in Tunis, Tunisia. The embassy will also issue visas to nationals of Malta who are resident in countries such as United Kingdom and Germany. Maltese citizens can stay without a visa for up to 30 days within 6 months starting from the first entry date.

Maltese citizens may travel to Jamaica without a visa for short stays (up to 90 days within six months). The option of obtaining permanent residency is also available under certain circumstances. However, they should note that the Embassy will only issue letters of support to European Union citizens who are travelling to Turkey for a short visit and who do not require a visa. Mexican nationals living in Turkey must contact the Embassy of Mexico in Ankara or the Consulate General of Mexico in Istanbul.

Malta does not have an official representative in Vietnam. Maltese citizens can enter Viet Nam without a visa for up to three months. However, Maltese citizens are required to apply for a visa if they wish to reside in Viet Nam or do business there.
